All's fair in love and war! This opinion is shared by one of the main characters of the story, Pavel. He feels a strong passion for eighteen-year-old Katya, the daughter of Irina, the owner of the stable where he works as a veterinarian. The hero comes up with different ways to interest Katya in his person. Over time, he will succeed, Pavel is sure, Katya will be with him. However, Pavel's plans instantly collapse because of Alexei, whom Katya finds on the road seriously wounded and in need of urgent medical attention. The girl brings Alexei to the stables and begs Pavel to operate on him. Alexei's appearance upsets the fragile balance of the farm's inhabitants, who live far from other people. Katya, a strange, extraordinary girl, falls in love with Alexei, who seeks to escape from this eerie place. The unexpected mutual love of Alexei and Katya infuriates Pavel; he did not expect such a turn of events! Irina is torn between her daughter and her love for Pavel. Gradually, passion, jealousy, and hatred in the love polygon are intertwined into a deadly tangle, and it seems that an inevitable tragic outcome awaits the heroes.
