New York is engulfed in a wave of strange and terrible murders. The husband of one of the victims, a drug lord, hires a former police officer to get to his wife's killer. Private detective Scudder sees what the police don't, and gets into places where the cops are afraid to even stick their nose. Unraveling the devil's crimes, he realizes that people are afraid of something completely wrong.
