Early 20th century. Michal, a young man who came from Poland to Germany, is trying to learn how to behave in different situations and learn etiquette. However, when he tries to meet girls using the rules he was taught, he only makes a fool of himself. Later, he gets a job with a man who owns a carousel and loves women. Michal meets a divorced landlady, Mrs. Luther, who gives him lessons in love. When he escapes from her, he gets a job in a mine and begins to frequent brothels. He treats women cynically.
