Russian Empire. Lawyer Pyotr Smirnov comes to the gloomy estate of the mysterious Count Draculov, whose ancestors hail from distant Transylvania, to formalize the purchase of a house in Moscow. The Count notices a photograph of Peter's fiancée, young Varya, and immediately rushes off to inspect his new property... Peter is worried, but his vigilance is lulled by the Count's diligent maids.
