Landscape designer Margaret, along with her businessman husband Clark and three children, moves from New York to Hong Kong, where she suffers from loneliness and lack of work. Living in the same house with Margaret are her school friend Hillary and her husband David - the couple is also going through a crisis due to unsuccessful attempts to conceive a child. One day, bored Margaret meets a homeless Korean woman, Mercy, who fled to Hong Kong from her oppressive mother, and offers her a job as a nanny. This seemingly noble decision leads Margaret's family to ruin.
