Martha, the wife of US Attorney General John Mitchell, was the first to notice that her husband was involved in some kind of conspiracy. As it turned out, the Republican Party bugged the Democratic headquarters at the Watergate Hotel during the 1972 presidential campaign. The trial in this case ended with the impeachment of President Nixon and went down in history as the Watergate scandal.
