During an international chess tournament held on a small island, someone kills young women. Tournament leader Peter Sanderson becomes a suspect. The police are trying to solve a problem no less complex than the games being played. Meanwhile, the killer teases Sanderson, slipping riddles with each victim that the champion must decipher. Will the grandmaster be able to predict the moves in this game? After all, every wrong move leads to a new murder.
