Young Sheriff Kyle Williams hopes in vain that a quiet life awaits him in the quiet town of Bywater. A series of mysterious murders leads him to believe that in the remote swamps near the city there is something mysterious that is killing people. The Indians warn Kyle that a terrible ancient force has awakened in their region, but local oil magnate Shist, who is trying to take control of the endless swamps, does not believe in the myths. At night, terrifying moans and screams are heard from the swamps, an atmosphere of oppressive fear hangs in the air, and Kyle decides to go into the swampy wilderness himself in search of the truth.
