About the movie

This chronicles the lives of two German sisters whose character truly determines their destiny. Marianne, radicalized by events in the mid-1970s, joins a terrorist cell and asks her sister Juliana to take her four-year-old son. Due to her obligations to her lover Wolfgang and her career as a writer, Juliana hesitates and refuses, and her decision has dire consequences: Marianne's ex-husband kills himself, and the boy is given to the state to raise. When the steely Marianne later shows up with two of her comrades, she not only uses Julianne for her own purposes, but also humiliates her by mocking her lifestyle and her free time activism. While Juliana fights the government in print, the paramilitary Marianne commits armed terrorist attacks, including bank robberies. Later, when Marianne dies mysteriously in prison, Juliana is overcome with guilt and begins to argue that her sister has been officially silenced.
