The happy days of the eighth-graders' first love dimmed when they learned that Nadya's mother and Seryozha's recently widowed father were going to live together. The youthful maximalism of teenagers hurts parents. But their ability to self-denial for the sake of the happiness of their children helps the latter to “see the light” and understand that one happiness is not a hindrance to another.
