End of the 18th century. Reign of Catherine II. In the deep Russian province, among the endless Ural steppes, escaped convict Emelyan Pugachev declared himself Emperor Peter III. Detachments of Cossacks, fugitive serfs and many dashing people stood under the banner of the impostor. In these troubled times, in the godforsaken Belogorsk fortress, young officer Pyotr Grinev meets his first love - Mashenka, the daughter of Captain Mironov.
