After receiving a negative response to a promotion at the university where she teaches, Dr. Lily Penlerick, a brilliant musicologist, visits her sister, who runs a rural school in Appalachia. There she stumbles upon the discovery of her life - a treasure trove of ancient Irish-Scottish ballads, songs that have been preserved from generation to generation and undamaged by time in the solitude of the mountains.
