In one of the research institutes, rare materials disappeared from the historical archive. Because of these documents, a conflict occurs between the employees of the research institute Platonov and Ozerny. It later turns out that Ozerov stole the materials and handed them over to a certain Barabanshchikov for sale. This news unsettles Platonov, his heart cannot stand it, and he dies. Drummer tries to get papers from a hiding place in the church, breaks down and falls to his death. The police take over the case. Colonel Kornilov is in charge of the investigation. He comes to the conclusion that both Platonov and Drummers died because of the same thing - the habitat where a change in values ​​occurred.
