1926 The height of the NEP. The Novgorod swindler Foundling, escaping from local bandits, ends up in Leningrad. Police officers mistakenly take him for a famous detective, who was recently appointed head of the Criminal Investigation Department. The foundling plans to disappear unnoticed, but, having learned that the city has a large warehouse of expensive evidence and expropriated things, he decides not to rush.
