The Handmaid's Tale

The action takes place in the future, in the Republic of Gilead, where the military is in power. The country has cruel orders and morals; only officers and their wives enjoy respect in society. In addition to the totalitarian structure of society, in the world of the future there is a serious problem - infertility. Only every hundredth woman is capable of reproducing offspring. To continue the officer line, families choose from among ordinary girls the one who will bear their unborn child. Young girls, bearers of privileged offspring, live in special guarded premises, most reminiscent of a prison, and know that immediately after giving birth they will have to part with their children.
