The fact is that the novel, which tells about a terrible murder, is a mirror image of Walter’s own life. What happens to the book's main character, the sullen detective Fingerling, reminds Walter too much of his own fate. As the events described in the novel begin to repeat themselves in real life, Walter, like Fingerling, falls under the strange power of the number 23, which he sees everywhere.
