Leningrad besieged by the Germans. Monuments and majestic cathedral domes are covered with camouflage netting, destroyed buildings, abandoned trams. Bombs and shells rain down from the sky almost non-stop, day and night, turning surviving houses into ruins and spreading death. The survivors left homeless are stifled by hunger. Hitler was convinced that hunger would turn Leningraders into a herd of wild animals tearing pieces of food from each other. The daily bread allowance for ordinary citizens and children has been reduced to 125 grams. The city's food supply has been practically interrupted. A crust of ice has covered Lake Ladoga, but there is still a whole month to wait before freezing occurs. This means that Ladoga will not work, and the city will die. The only hope for salvation is a narrow frozen spit along which cars with bread can move. But only one person knows about the existence of the spit - Vasily Pavlovich Krause, a hydrograph scientist, whose traces were lost somewhere in Peterhof. Senior State Security Major Malinin has been entrusted with finding Krause. The lives of the townspeople depend on the results of his actions. Among them are the young policewoman Nina Tsvetkova and the lively journalist Kate Davis who unexpectedly appeared in the city, the prima donna of the Leningrad operetta actress Anastasia Vozdvizhenskaya and the young mother of two amazing children Sonya Krasko.
