The story takes place in 1327 in a monastery in northwestern Italy, where the influential Franciscan monk William of Baskerville and his companion, the young novice Adso, arrive. The monks are to organize negotiations for representatives of Pope John XXII and an order that is about to be declared heretical. However, in the monastery, a powerful fortress cut off from the world and visitors, a mysterious murder occurs.
