Danny is the eldest son of the grumpy and once famous sculptor Harold Mairowitz, a ne'er-do-well and lame songwriter. Danny came to New York to visit his father, bringing his daughter and his problems. Harold, in addition to Danny, has a daughter, Jean, and a son from another marriage, a successful accountant named Matthew, who lives in Los Angeles. Harold also has problems, for example, his fourth wife recently quit drinking, which is why her character has deteriorated. Soon Harold has an exhibition of his work at MOMA.
