The plot unfolds almost imperceptibly, detailing the relationships between the residents of the town. A mentally retarded boy, Billy, lives in the town; he is cruelly bullied and made fun of by the regulars of the local cinema, which has a cafe and a billiard room owned by Sam the Lion, a former cowboy, an idol adored by all the boys.
