Henry Chynaski is a horse racing addict and a passionate lover of Jane and Laura, who are as eager to drink as he is. He lives in order to look at life in the smallest detail and describe it in prose and verse. He works in factories and warehouses to live as he likes, i.e., to drink, to play races and to socialize with women as restless as himself, and most importantly to write stories that no one wants to print. This is the story of a man living on the edge, the story of a fringe writer who is willing to risk anything to prove that his life and his poetry are one and the same.
