The film takes place in the US during the Depression in the 1930s. Caliph McKinney, on his way to California, stops to earn money on a small farm in Missouri with Lute Wade. Living with them on the farm are Lute's niece, the beautiful Hannah, and her husband Sidney, a slacker and drunkard who is just waiting for Lute's death to take over his farm.
