The film takes place in the 19th century (1848) during the struggle of the patriotic forces of Italy against Austrian rule. A random shell breaks through the wall of the prison, which the thief and bandit Kainazzo manages to take advantage of. While he was in prison, Italy turned into a testing ground for political strife and battles. Understanding nothing about politics, which he deeply cares about, Cainazzo gets caught up in a whole series of funny, but often scary adventures with baker Romolo from Rome, whose bakery was destroyed by a shell.
