About the movie
In 1562, Charles IX ruled France and religious wars raged. Marie de Maiziere, one of the kingdom's wealthiest heiresses, loves the young Duke de Guise, later nicknamed "The Marked One," and he seems to share her feeling. However, the girl’s father, the Marquis de Maiziere, seeks to elevate his family, and gives her daughter to marry Prince Montpensier, whom she does not even know. Charles IX summons the prince to join him in fighting the Protestants. France is engulfed in the flames of war, and Montpensier sends his young wife to the remote castle of Champigny, accompanied by the Comte de Chabannes. He instructs the count, his former mentor and friend, to complete the upbringing of the young princess, so that one day she can appear at court. Marie tries to forget the passion she still has for Giza. Circumstances develop in such a way that Guise and the Duke of Anjou, the future King Henry III, come to Champigny, while Montpensier is there. The Duke of Anjou, like Count de Chabanne, falls in love with the princess. Marie becomes the subject of a dangerous and fierce rivalry.
