While vacationing with her husband in the Caribbean, Italian Paola finds a friend, a black woman named Stella, who introduces her to the customs and beliefs of the local residents. Fascinated by stories about voodoo and the mythical snake god Jamballa, Paola begins to become increasingly involved in occult rituals, soon becoming a direct participant.
