The film takes place during the First World War. Ksenia Gerstel, the daughter of a millionaire industrialist, remains an orphan – her father was killed during the riots, and soon Ksenia learns that her fiancé Sasha died at the front. Desperate, she entered the Red Cross and left the sister of mercy on the front line, where she met a new love - Major General Rostislav Batorsky, the man who saved her life and actually replaced her father, settling her after demobilization in his apartment in Petrograd. A single fifty-three-year-old general falls in love with Xenia, surrounds her with care and attention, and eventually they become husband and wife. After endless losses and disappointments, Xenia finds faith in the future, dreams of a big happy family, children. But the revolution of 1917 plunges Russia into the abyss of bloody chaos, and Xenia’s hopes are not destined to come true
