A film about the first months of the Great Patriotic War. The heroes of the film are Veremeykovites, residents of a small village that is lost among the Belarusian forests. In the summer of 1941, the echo of the war reached here. Abandoned by the Red Army but not yet taken by the Germans, their village found itself in no man's land. Soldiers wandered along forest paths, getting out of encirclement, the Germans drove prisoners to concentration camps, and the first partisan detachments were created in the forest thickets. It was a time of assumptions, doubts, rumors, a troubled time of either anarchy or dual power. The heroes must decide the main question for themselves - how to live in the current conditions? Everyone finds their own way, but together they resist death and violence...
