In 1925, a terrible drought broke out in the northeast of Brazil, and the starving population was forced to hastily leave the scorched and barren fields. The refugees' route lay to the south of the country, and they could take with them only the minimum necessary for survival. Among the new arrivals was a young mulatto girl, Gabriela, who had lost her parents as a child. Naive and raised in an environment where everything was determined mainly by moral values, she perceives everything that happens with childish spontaneity. Gabriela gets a job as a cook in the house of the Arab Nasib, who owns the Vesuvius bar. Nasib falls passionately in love with the young and pretty Gabriela with cinnamon-colored skin.
