Pensioner and former mathematics teacher Agata Denisovna Marfina, after the death of her husband, moves to an elite village to live with her daughter’s family. She longs for her old life, when every evening she and her husband played chess and discussed his daily affairs. But one day, having become the only witness to a mysterious murder, Agata Denisovna takes up her own investigation. She is helped in this by a former student, local investigator Eduard Sviridov, and a new neighbor, retired judge Igor Kholodov. A successfully solved case not only brings new acquaintances together, but also opens the way for the main character to even more complicated crimes.
