The story takes place in northern Canada in the 1930s. The Eskimo tribe (or, as they call themselves, Inuit) lives their traditional life in the tundra, but the “white man” is increasingly penetrating into it. White people buy skins obtained from hunting from the Inuit, and in return they sell weapons, salt, and alcohol. The Inuit themselves did not notice how they became dependent on the “white people”; they were no longer able to do without them and their goods.
