The film takes place in 1943 in one of the Ural factory cities. Evacuees from Central Russia come there. In this city, a group of boys, former classmates, live and work at a tank production plant. The shell-shocked captain Shatrov, who is also the military commandant of the city, teaches the boys military affairs. The beauty Lida Saltanova, evacuated from Stalingrad, appears here, exciting the entire city. All the men fall in love with her: the boys, the bandit Galimbievsky, Shatrov, whose dead bride is so similar to Lida. The boys, led by Shatrov, declare a desperate war on Galimbievsky’s gang. In the finale, they go to the front to protect Lida, their homes, their city, their homeland...
