On a beautiful summer morning in 1900, two boys are born in the Italian province of Emilia. Olmo is another mouth in a large family of a poor peasant. Alfredo is the offspring of wealthy landowners. Despite such a different social situation, the boys will not only make friends, but will carry on friendship throughout their lives. They are the children of the terrible years of Europe, whose adolescence will fall on the years of the First World War, and maturity will come into its own under the roar of Hitler’s guns. There will be plenty in between. Fascist Italy is a troubled country. The age-old order of society changes, the people learn more and more from the socialists about their rights, Mussolini uses the turmoil to seize power. The winds of change are pouring into the province of Emilia. Relations between peasants and landowners are strained, but Olmo and Alfredo remain friends. The interweaving of destinies - close and infinitely distant, the interweaving of the life of the individual and the life of the country.
